Yeah! I am agreed with farebuzz, if you are going to Argentina just for travel. It is not must to learn Spanish because you can hire a guide for few days but if you are going for the stay it is must have to understand the peoples.

People here appreciate it when you make an effort to communicate in their language and yes, if they can, they will try to meet you half way by speaking English -not everyone speaks English as quoted earlier. You can take a look into a number of free podcast for Spanish beginners and listen to them in your ipod or mp3

In general, I always go with Berghaus and Low Alpine as their quality is very good.

Re lockable zippers, Lowe Alpine might be the better option but only by a tiny margin. Locks aren't always necessary with a massive backpack in my opinion, but i change my mind on this with every trip!

Couple of general pointers:

- always go to the stores and see them in real life, then check the web for a better priced deal just in case
- don't fill your whole bag up, and ensure that a good 10-20% of it is free. you will always accumulate stuff on the way, want to buy a souvenir, have wet clothes etc etc!!

I have a weird question, and maybe only US-based members would understand. I have stuff, including a condo. I've already been bitten by the travel bug, going on 7 years now. I now have an opportunity to do a very long extended travel now, but I am having trouble shaking off the "need" to hold onto my stuff, especially my condo. Part of the reason is that I live in a very desirable city, one that I want to return to. It's kind of an American thing, the attachment to material assets. Another part of the reason it's hard for me is that I will eventually need this stuff again to do something also in my plans when I come back from travels. I'd like to hear how others have struggled with this and the solution they came up with.

A few months back, I was gung ho about putting all my stuff into storage and renting out my condo and then take off for a year. Now, I'm not so sure I can do what I need to do while traveling and away from my stuff. Keeping my stuff idle while I'm traveling is an expensive proposition. That money would be put to better use traveling. My current plan now is to go for 3 months and see if I can focus on my other plans and enjoying the travels. Then I come back to San Fran and decide what to do with my stuff. I've talked to some friends, and I've been told that my other plan cannot be done effectively while traveling for a year, thus the 3 months trial.

Argentina is a South American country, constituted as a federation of twenty-three provinces and an autonomous city. It is second in size on the South American continent to Brazil and eighth in the world. Argentina occupies a continental surface area of 2,766,890 km² between the Andes mountain range in the west and the southern Atlantic Ocean in the east and south. It is bordered by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south.

Spanish in Rosario is a quaint language school based on the philosophy of language being the most profound aspect of culture. We are located in Rosario, a fairly new addition to the tourist circuit of Argentina, offering for an ideal location to learn and study Spanish.

Dianne, I was just casually looking throught the travel guide to see what was being promotioned in Argentina. I am a US citizen that fell in love with a man from Rosario Argentina, and now live here.
I started a language study program last year, perhaps it might interest you. Buenos Aires has millions of langauge study programs, but Rosario is a smaller, not yet exploited by turists, city, with really allows you to use what you learn.
check it out if you want.

good luck with your travels and your studies!

Hi Dianne,

Many foreigners come to Argentina to learn Spanish. As you have been studying Spanish in Spain, you will likely find the Spanish spoken here rather different. In Argentina, we use \"vos\" instead of \"tu.\" The accent is quite distinct and many common words are borrowed from Italian. Check out our excellent article on Lunfardo. According to the Oxford Spanish Dictionary a lunfardo is “a form of Buenos Aires slang that originated in the underworld. It draws on many languages, including Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and several African languages.” Where you want to study all depends on what it is you want to learn!

Good luck in your decision and if you decide to come to Argentina, drop us an email!

Saludos,

I have a plan to learn Argentine languages..

I’m studying Spanish in Madrid and enjoying it greatly – I’ve been in the city for almost a year now, feel have integrated well and can use my Spanish confidently. It’s been such a good experience that once university finishes, I’m considering another (albeit shorter) language learning trip – an Italian course in Italy or perhaps something a little more exotic – sejours linguistiques en Egypte. I’ve found Spanish to the majority of Europe’s big cities so the world really is my oyster – I need to decide what’s best for me; I need advice! Being a competent Spanish speaker, I think Italian is probably the best option given that it is so similar to Spanish. Bearing in mind I will only have 6 weeks in my destination, the easiness factor is a very important one! German appeals because of its utility (I am studying business alongside Spanish and the German industry interests me greatly) but I think it would be difficult to get a useful (as in capability of using it professionally) understanding of a language in just 6 weeks. I also want sun! Please, all advice would be very much welcome!

That\'s right sigroid! I think that knowing or understanding and being able to speak the basic words and especially the ones for asking for the price and discounts. Well, no trip is complete without shopping, right?
