Jeronimo Luis de Cabrera founded Cordoba, the capital of Cordoba province, in 1573 as one of the first Spanish colonial capitals in Argentina. The city boasts the country's best-preserved colonial architecture that contrasts the more modern buildings representing progressive economic growth. The influence of the Jesuits can be seen throughout the province, but especially in the city's breathtaking 17th century Manzana Jesuitica (Jesuit Block), underground Jesuit crypts, and la ®Universidad Nacional de Argentina®, the country's oldest university.
